Flat panel lamination for technical foams
Technical foams are used in a wide range of applications, often for the purposes of insulation, sealing, shock absorption, sound damping or protection. Examples include applications in the automotive, construction, industrial, medical and electronics sectors.
Successfully laminating technical foams requires more than just a good adhesive. Different types of foam all behave differently and place high demands on the coating and lamination process. PUR hotmelt offers the ultimate combination of flexibility, process control and reliable adhesion.
Why use PUR hotmelt for technical foams?
With technical foams, it’s all about achieving a strong bond without compromising the material’s properties. PUR hotmelt makes this possible thanks to the precision with which it can be applied, its rapid initial adhesion, flexibility and durable final bond.
Bonding technical foams with PUR hotmelt offers the following benefits:
- Suitable for high production speeds
- Strong adhesion to a wide range of foam types
- Low coating weights possible
- Retention of flexibility and compression properties
- High resistance to moisture and temperature
- Reduced risk of delamination during use
Challenges in bonding technical foams
Bonding foams with an open or closed-cell structure
Not all foams react in the same way to adhesive. Some foams absorb a lot of adhesive, whilst others have a closed surface on which adhesion is more difficult to achieve. By using the correct pre-treatment in combination with our Roller Coater technology, you can be sure of a very even application of adhesive and a curing process that is tailored to the properties of your specific type of foam.
Preserving material properties
Bonding different material combinations
Technical foams are often combined with materials such as textiles, films, plastics or metals. Drawing on our expertise in surface treatment, coating technology and adhesive selection, we develop a process that ensures a reliable bond between the different materials.
The following materials, amongst others, can be bonded using PUR hotmelt:
- PE foam
- PU foam
- EPDM foam
- EVA foam
- XLPE foam
- Textiles
- Films
- Plastics
- Aluminium
- Non-woven materials
Do you work with a different combination of materials? If so, we would be happy to investigate which bonding solution best suits your application.

How we support you
When it comes to technical foams, every application has its own specific requirements. After all, the required flexibility, compression value, bond strength and production speed vary depending on the end product. That is why we take a holistic view of the entire process: from material behaviour and surface properties to coating technology and line configuration.
Our engineers provide support with:
- Material and adhesion testing
- Selection of PUR and MR adhesives
- Corona, plasma, primer and other surface treatments
- Development of complete coating and lamination processes
- Process validation at our test facilities in Raalte
By optimally coordinating materials, adhesives and process settings, we help you achieve a stable production process and a reliable end product.
